FATHER-of-one Kyle Burns is doing an apprenticeship in roof tiling and slating at South Lanarkshire College while working for DMG Services Group in Wishaw, near Glasgow.
Kyle, 25, said: “I did a football scholarship in the US and once that ended, I wanted to get into a trade, and roofing in particular.
“I started the apprenticeship four years ago and I’ve never regretted it for a second. It’s one of the best decisions I ever made.
“I didn’t know anything about roofing when I started and now I can start a roof from scratch and complete it on my own.
“I do two weeks in class at college then two weeks on site.
My boss Darren McGhee has a training academy in the office so that’s another place I can further my skills.
“College gives you the basic skills, but you learn a lot more on site as there is so much you cannot learn in a classroom.
“Right now, I’m on £35,000 a year and that’s good for a fourth-year apprentice. I’m learning every day and doing high-end roofing on luxury homes. I love it.”
